Surface Care
(Hard Wax Oil)

Care for your Hardwood Furniture Finished with Hard Wax Oil

Regular Cleaning

  • Dust regularly: Use a soft cloth or microfiber pad to gently remove dust and debris.

  • Clean spills promptly: Wipe up liquids immediately with a slightly damp cloth to prevent staining or water damage.

  • Use damp cloth & mild soap: For routine cleaning, use a damp (not wet) cloth and a mild, pH-neutral soap.

Safe for Regular Cleaning:

  • Mild, pH-neutral soap diluted in water

  • Commercial hard wax oil cleaners (Osmo Wash and Care, WOCA Oil Refreshing Soap, Treatex Surface Cleaner)

Safe for Stubborn Stains:

  • Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner or similar specialized product

  • Odourless mineral spirits (sparingly, and only for spot cleaning)

  • Non-abrasive cleaner designed for oiled wood surfaces (follow manufacturer instructions)

  • Non-abrasive sponges (very lightly)

Never Use:

  • All-purpose cleaners, harsh detergents, bleach, or ammonia-based products

  • Strong solvents: acetone, turpentine, paint thinner, naphtha, Goof Off, etc.

  • Abrasive pads, hard-bristled brushes, or aggressive scrubbing

  • Dish soap or degreasers formulated to strip oils (these can dissolve the hard wax layer and dull the finish)

  • Steam cleaners or excessive water (can penetrate finish and warp wood)

Preventing Damage

  • Use coasters, placemats, and trivets: Protect surfaces from hot pans, mugs, and wet items.

  • Avoid standing water: Never let water sit on the finish; always wipe dry.

  • Sunlight & heat: Limit direct sun exposure to prevent fading or drying.

Note: Always test any new cleaner in an inconspicuous area first and follow the manufacturer’s care recommendations for your specific hard wax oil product.

By following these guidelines, you will preserve the warmth, beauty, and durability of your hardwood furniture for years to come!
